PhillyNORML Candlelight Vigil 2005

On April 22nd 2005 at 7:30 PM a Candlelight Vigil was held in Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for all the Medical Cannabis Patients deceased and living in America. This Candlelight Vigil is officially PhillyNORML’s 2nd Annual event and Universal Arts, Inc. (again) was honored to be there.

We both find it rewarding that our two organizations are able to come together and form an alliance to voice our support for Medical Freedom.

Although the weather on 4-22-05 was calling for rain, we agreed to show up just incase the news media presented itself and we were not there. Thankfully we did, because someone of great importance was there to greet us!

Jim Miller! Who brought with him a portable memorial of his wife, Cheryl Lee Miller, to share with us his story of their fight against medical marijuana prohibition. Thank you Jim for making this a memorable event!

A few hours prior to the event, we decided to have a four way conference call to discuss a rain date on the following Friday. It was clear the weather wasn't going to cooperate.

I then e-mailed and called contacts to inform them of the cancellation and the rain date on the following Friday, 4-29-05. I also asked if they wouldn't mind paticipating on this event as well. (To light a candle with us.)

On 4-29-05 at 7:30 PM, even though weather conditions were still unfavorable, PhillyNorml showed up, bringing with them books and pamphlets. Among them was a paperback book, (Professionally bound) called “Patients in the Crossfire; Casualties in the War on Medical Marijuana”, supplied by Americans for Safe Access. (It's the book with the purple cover that you can see in the first photo to the left of this paragraph.)

And, of course, Universal Arts, Inc. brought MEDICAL FREEDOM t-shirts to add to this event's informative collection of materials.

I personally (William Haney) would like to thank Rebecca Saltzman and the staff at Americans for Safe Access for supplying the printed materials and for lighting a candle with us. Also Cher Ford McCullough from American Alliance for Medical Cannabis, Women’s Organization for National Prohibition Reform and Compassionate Moms and Anita T. Mayfield from the U S Marijuana Party who also lit a candle for this event.

The states that participated in this event are as follows CA, FL, IL, KY, LA, ME, MS, NC, RI, UT, and Washington DC. Making this event stretch coast to coast thank you all for your support!

I would now like to take a moment and ask everyone reading this to say a prayer for the deceased Cheryl Lee Miller and the living Jim Miller. They are amongst the casualties that we honor and mourn, and they are part of the reason why we have this annual event. We thank you for your support and hope to see you next year!
